Theotoke Parthene Hyere (The Angelic Salutation)

$2.15

A lovely, joyful setting of the Greek Orthodox text of the Angelic Salutation. (“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee…”) The liturgical Greek text celebrates Mary as the Theotokos (God-Bearer) and is perfect for the Feast of the Annunciation, or any other time.

Description

Theotoke Parthene, Hyere!
keharitomeni Maria
o Kyrios meta sou
evloyimeni, si en yinexi
ke evloyimenos o karpos tis kilias su
oti Sotira etekes ton psilon imon.
God-bearing Virgin, Hail!
Mary, who is Grace Embodied,
the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
And blessed is the fruit born of your womb
That is the Savior of our souls.

Composer’s note on Greek transliteration: I have rendered the Greek text into syllables that should be sung as one would Latin. Two sounds of note that do not appear in Latin are that of χ, which I have rendered as an ‘h’, and should be pronounced as the “ch” in Bach and/or the ‘ch” in “Chanukah” (a voiceless uvular fricative). The other is γ, which I have rendered as a ‘y’; it is properly pronounced as a sound halfway between ‘y’ and ‘g’, in the back of the throat (a voiced velar fricative). For the purposes of this piece, ‘y’ is adequate. Other ‘y’s in the piece, which occur with consonants, should be pronounced as in ‘Kyoto’. – KK
