sleep

text by Steven Smallwood, music by Katie Kring

“sleep” started out as an impressionistic, stream of consciousness poem by my friend Steven that he wrote on Facebook. (Weirdly, not my first piece setting a friend’s Facebook status.) Steven’s poem has a gorgeous, pastoral and lyrical quality that I have tried to capture in the musical setting.

the mountain air and the lake and the smoke and the crackling forest and the clean sleep and the crisp cover and brisk slumber and the moon and the quieting and the long one and the long two and the silence and the shifting leaves and the owl and the final scramble hoot and the first chirp and the two and reluctant three and the chorus and the dream and sun and dream and sun and dream and sun and dream and flight and becoming alive.
